This quote resonates with me at the moment. I seem to have lost all optimism. I am plagued with doubt. Sitting down in front of the manuscript, any manuscript, and I am instantly fatigued.

Send help, my friends. I am floating down the river away from myself.

  1. It’s a curious thing, isn’t it, how enthusiasm waxes and wanes, how confidence ebbs and flows? Write for long enough and you’ll experience the entire gamut from scribbling frantically in every spare moment, to staring at the wall, mind as blank as a Zen master’s, and from absolute certainty that, if you could just get your work in front of the right editor, you’d be recognised at last, to the sad acknowledgement that you are, after all, nothing special.

    Been there. Done that.

And so will you, I’m sorry to say.

These days, when I’m becalmed in the productivity doldrums, I just ride it out, get on with something else and stick a post-it note on the bit of my brain that used to write, saying, “Do not discard.” As always happens, I will one day rediscover the joy of creating worlds and people and stories I love. And I’ll jump back in the bucket seat, slam her into ‘drive’ and take off for destinations unknown.

And so will you, I’m pleased to say.
